Announcing Slackware Linux 12.2!

Yes folks, 'tis the season to announce a new release of Slackware. With a shiny new kernel, many package updates, and the newly added ability to install from a Samba share, we bring to you the latest in the stable Slackware 12.x series. Slackware 12.2 ships with the 2.6.27.7 Linux kernel, the Xorg 1.4.2 X server (with many driver, library, and application updates), Xfce 4.4.3, KDE 3.5.10, simplified wired and wireless networking with wicd in /extra, package upgrade management with slackpkg moved into the main tree, support for non-usb-storage digital cameras through libgphoto2, pm-utils (tools to support suspend and hibernate through HAL), and much, much more. This release brings the system up-to-date without compromising stability or compatibility with the 12.x series.

That's right -- KDE version 4.1 is now part of Slackware -current (in the /testing directory), so for everyone who can't wait to try it out, have a look at it! We're all (very happily) using it here now, and it has come a long way since the first 4.x release. Congratulations to the KDE team for the fine work (and many thanks to Robby Workman and Heinz Wiesinger for all the help with build scripts and testing for the initial Slackware packaging of KDE4). Have fun!

Reason is a popular music software program developed by Swedish software developers Propellerhead Software. It emulates a rack of hardware synthesizers, samplers, signal processors, sequencers and mixers. Reason can be used either as a complete virtual music studio, or as a collection of virtual instruments to be played live or used with other sequencing software.
The program's name was taken from a device used in Neal Stephenson's science fiction novel Snow Crash. Early in development it was known as Realizer (after the PPG Realizer).

Reason 1.0 was released in November 2000. The program's design mimics a studio rack into which users can insert virtual devices such as instruments, effects processors and mixers. These modules can be controlled from Reason's built-in MIDI sequencer or from other sequencing applications such as Pro Tools, Logic, Digital Performer, Cubase, Sonar and GarageBand via Propellerhead's ReWire protocol.

As of version 4.0, modules available include:

* Subtractor: a subtractive synthesizer
* Malstr�m: a graintable synthesizer
* NN-19: a standard digital sampler, which loads pre-recorded instrumental and vocal sounds
* NN-XT: an advanced digital sampler, which features the option of tweaking the various modulation, oscillation and filter parameters of a preloaded sample or patch
* Dr Rex: a loop playback device, which slices prerecorded samples into manageable, bitesize units
* Redrum: a drum machine with a 64-step pattern sequencer, allowing for playback of the library of pre-recorded drum and effects samples.
* Thor: a semi-modular, polyphonic synthesizer that features, among others, wavetable, FM and phase modulation synthesis that can be routed through various types of filter modules.

Sounds from these devices can be routed via either of two mixing devices, or simple merging and splitting utilities. Effects include distortion, reverb, chorus, a vocoder and mastering effects. The Combinator device, introduced in version 3.0, allows users to combine multiple modules into one. Another device connects Reason to Propellerhead's (now discontinued) ReBirth.

Reason's interface includes a Toggle Rack command, which flips the rack around to display the devices from the rear. Here the user can route virtual audio and control cables from one piece of equipment to another in an almost unlimited number of ways. This cable layout enables the creation of complex effects chains and allows devices to modulate one another in creative ways.

Reason cannot record audio into Reason itself (i.e. it's not a full DAW). It also does not support VST and other third-party plug-ins.

A stripped-down version of Reason known as Reason Adapted is packaged as bonus software with other audio software such as Pro Tools LE. It restricts the user to a limited number of devices.

Reason 4 was released on September 26, 2007. Improvements to Reason include Thor, a modular synth; RPG-8, a real-time programmable arpeggiator; ReGroove, a detimer/dequantizer; and a complete change to Reason's sequencer that includes tempo and meter changes as well as support for complex meters. Also included is vector automation (in-track automation/envelope curves), a new pattern lane for editing patterns in arrange view, foldable tracks (mimicking Logic's folder functionality), beat/bar count-in, and support for multiple takes.

Release Notes
The goal of this release is to address several bugs that were introduced with the release of Lightroom 2.0 and provide additional camera raw support. A comprehensive list of issues fixed in this release is included below:

Stability and High Severity Bugs - Fixed
Lightroom could crash when switching to or from the web module on Windows Vista 64.
Selecting a custom camera profile or using auto-white balance could cause a spinning ball.
Preference files pointing to missing catalogs could prevent Lightroom from progressing past the registration dialog.
Errors could occur when attempting to create a virtual copy with a computer that has a processor that is not SSE2 enabled. (This is a method of delivering instructions to the processor which was introduced with the Pentium 4 processor. It should not have affected a significant number of modern machines.)
Modal dialogs could try to appear on a disabled second monitor, causing Lightroom to appear hung or unresponsive.
When a DNG file was selected for export to a derivative TIFF file and it is added to the catalog at export there was a possibility that one of the files could be treated as a sidecar within Lightroom such that deleting one file deletes both.

Performance Bugs - Fixed
Attempting to import a large number of images that already exist within the Lightroom catalog could cause significant performance delays.
The image counts that appear next to each folder could appear to populate slowly.
Lightroom scanned the calibration profile directory excessively when switching collections.
The 'three dot' indicator in the grid view persisted longer than necessary.
The Mac 64-bit version did not have SSE2 optimization, causing reduced rendering speeds.
Memory leaks in the Library and Develop modules decreased Lightroom performance.
Applying keywords via presets or on import could greatly decrease import performance.
Folder synchronizing could experience significant performance decreases.

Keywords and Metadata - Fixed
Keywords from Lightroom 1.4 were not included on image export by default. (Please note that catalogs upgraded from Lightroom 1.4 using Lightroom 2.1 will not have this issue, but catalogs upgraded from 1.4 using 2.0 will still need to use the script posted at our technical support site at: http://www.adobe.com/go/kb405074.)
Lightroom stopped rendering previews prior to completion on files with metadata changes applied by other applications.
The "Any Searchable Field" search option did not find caption text.

Photoshop Interop - Fixed
Edit in Photoshop did not work correctly or at all for some customers.
Copyright Status and Info URL fields were not transferred when a file was created from Lightroom for use in Photoshop.
XMP metadata from the IDimager application was not carried over during an Edit in Photoshop operation.
Files with an ampersand in the file name were not added back to the Lightroom Library after an Edit in Photoshop session.
Choosing to Edit in Photoshop from a folder with an apostrophe in the name would cause the feature to fail.
Certain NEF files were rotated incorrectly when opened into Photoshop from Lightroom.

Miscellaneous Troubling Items - Fixed
Re-importing missing photos from an exported catalog could ignore the setting 'preserve old settings as virtual copy.'
Choosing to undo a slider adjustment in Lightroom on Windows would cause two undo steps to occur if the slider was still under active mouse selection.
Lights Out mode could flicker on Windows when the detail panel was selected in the Develop module.
The crop aspect ratio could revert to the last selected ratio even when it had been reset to original.
The spot tool might not switch from clone to healing mode upon request if the brush was above a certain size.
Certain ORF files were not read by Lightroom.
During import and conversion to DNG, file renaming could use the operating system's date stamp rather than the file�s EXIF date.
Panoramic images printed with a portrait layout and utilizing the auto layout functionality would cause images to print at a low resolution.

Pending Investigations
The following are issues that are still under investigation and not fixed in this release:
Catalogs with hundreds of root (top level) folders can cause very slow launch times. We are currently testing a fix for this but need more time to evaluate it. As a workaround, try right-clicking a root folder and choosing �Add Parent Folder� until the number of folders at the left-most level of the Folders hierarchy is significantly reduced.
We are still working on additional methods to improve the performance of the new Localized Correction features.
